LIMITATIONS ON OLDER AND NON-PRO DEVICES

“The app quits when trying to import an asset or adding my 150th complicated scene, or exporting a large project…”

We’re here to help, have real solutions, and will keep it simple.

The main limitation and source of almost all “unexpected quits” is the amount of RAM or memory that’s available. Apple doesn’t tell us how much memory is available, or when they’ll “quit” us. They keep it all a bit of a mystery. Consult the chart below for your device’s total memory.

Q:  How do I stop from crashing when I

  1. Open a complicated Project with many scenes.
  2. Import a prop or image
  3. Export a complicated project with many scenes.
  4. While using AR, PoseCap, etc etc.

A: How to fix this:

  1. Restart your device. Really, this actually helps a lot short term, and can get you back into your project. Apple keeps lots of stuff open it may not be using, and each of those eats away at total RAM available.  This is not a long term solution though!
  2. Use fewer imported props and images. This is almost certainly the source of the problem. As long as you’re on an older device there will be some hard limits to how much stuff you can add to an individual project. So try being more choosy in how you use imported assets.  By all means import the Maltese Falcon, but maybe Sam Spades’ office is just 3 walls and the desk and chair from the included props.
  3. Break your Project into Acts. Make a new Project and import the second half of your scenes into it.  Delete them from the original, so the original Project is happy and not hitting your RAM ceiling.  Maybe each Chapter or Act of your film can be in it’s own Project?  Find out how to move assets between projects here.
  4. Upgrade your device with a newer model.

Breaking your project up or upgrading your device are the two long term solutions.  If your device is 6GB or more and you’re reading this, can't fix your issue with above suggestions and are still having trouble please drop us a note, we’d love to work with you to figure out what’s going on. Really, we’ll make it right if the issue isn’t the Physics limitations of older Apple device. It’s why we’re here and what your Subscription is paying for.

Q:  My older device worked fine, now it’s crashing.

A: First, restart, something maybe going on that can be fixed. Second, as we upgrade Previs Pro (1.0 didn’t have importing) and Apple upgrades their OS (iOS 18 is bigger, Apple Intelligence!), older devices get less free space. We try to support as many devices as we can.

Thank you!
